When she got so sick that she had to go to Tofino, where she was told she had tested positive for the virus, her family thought she would finally get the care she needed. Instead, Dick was sent alone to a hotel room, something her family is struggling to understand. When Dick was eventually admitted to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, she was placed in the intensive care unit, where she is slowly recovering 10 days later.
Two days after Dick first went to the Ahousaht medical clinic on Nov. Dick was too weak to eat and in too much pain to sleep, Ina said. The family decided she needed to go to hospital, so on Nov. On Nov. Ina, who lives in Port Alberni, met her mother at the dock and helped her get from the boat to the hospital.
Medical staff told Dick she had tested positive, but Ina was not allowed to remain at the hospital with her. When she called the hospital later that evening to check on how her mom was doing, she was told Dick had been sent to a Tofino hotel.
Ina checked into another room in the hotel so she could check on her mom regularly. On the afternoon of Dec. An ambulance took Darlene Dick back to Tofino General Hospital, and from there, she was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, where she is recovering in the intensive care unit. She has been unable to move for 10 days and will soon undergo physiotherapy to regain her strength, Ina said.
